JUST REMINISCING
BY Mrs. Whitley
6th grade, 1956Another year will soon become just a memory,
For summer with her golden hand is beckoning to you and to me.
And when the doors swing closed at last we'll feel a little sad,
For this has been the nicest year that we have ever had. We'll remember, you and I, the fun we had in days gone by--
The talent shows, (and of course, the work)
Bill Grogan's Goat and the Tootin' Turk. We'll remember the daily news, Sputnik I and Sputnik II--
Vanguard's flops--space age dreams---
And Bill's daily report on the baseball teams. We went around the world in 80 days or more,
Though we never got to China, Japan or Singapore.
Mexico was quite a treat---we learned to say "amigo",
Muchas gracias, si si senor"--(We never quite mastered the lingo)Some have won lasting fame for successs they've had this year.
We'll remember Julie and her poems we all loved to hear.
When it came to science, we crowded the halll of fame---
There was scarcely a single reptile that Jack Haymond couldn't name! And the solar system came into view
When David Lynch pushed a button or two!
We had moths and cocoons all over the room
Darrell could tell if they would hatch out soon.
We almost missed our lunch one day,
We were glad the suspense was past.
The cocoon unfolded, the moth spread her wings--
And we could relax at last.Polaris and light years were terms that we heard,
James knew a lot about these--
And if it was turtles you wondered about,
Virginia was the one you should see..We had singers, artists, writers, musicians,
Talented speakers and mathematicians.
And it isn't every 6th grade who can boast
Of a real, bona-fide magician! It would take a whole book to give credit where due,
But we've got to go on and mention a few! We'll remember Bertie and Marcia, too, for the peppy duets they liked to do.
We'll remember arithmetic, we'll remember Pete,
When it came to fractions and decimals, he was the one you tried to beat. We'll remember songs we sang, (sometimes we sang off-key)
But Patty Monson helped us most on our 3-part harmony. When it came to beautiful maps and charts, Judy Putnam's were the finest around,
And the extra credit kept pouring in 'cause Tina just wouldn't slow down.Patrol was a duty you never could shirk--
And you were faithful though it really was work!
And the most faithful of all, I'm sure you're aware,
Was Judy Whaley who did more than her share.
The patrol members' reward finally came
You were guests of the city at the basebaseball game.
We'll remember the athletes we had and the track meet we had,
You won your share of ribbons and we all were really glad.
We'll remember Ricky for very many things,
But mostly 'cause he ran as if his feet wore silver wings.
Miriam's swimming won for her a trip to Vancouver B.C.
And Bertie could toss a softball nearly "fer as the eye could see."The ball players among us numbered quite a few,
Once in a while they'd quit talking, and sock out a home run or two.
Pete could field 'em, Riley could throw 'em in,
Sluggers were Dick and Roger, David, Larry and Jim.
Then there was Paul, most famous of all.
He even hid a story written about him!The musicians among us were the stars of the show,
At the PTA meeting at good old Monroe.
If Old King Cole were a merry old sould and he called for his fiddlers three
You can bet he would hear sweet music in his ear
Played by David P., Michelle, and Becky.
A new girl who came, (Pat Traver's her name)
Was a cute golden haired soprano.
And Alan Dixon, I reckon, could make Liberace come in second,
When he plays on that old grand pi-an-o.We had lots of artists. To mention a few there were
David Lynch, David Pautstein, and Jack Raymond, too.
Julie and Dick, Alan and Carol,
Riley and James, Pete, Amber and Coral. For friendliness and helpfulness and scholarship so fine
We'll remember Elena, Linda, Betty and Patty Irvine.
When we remember Linda, we'll remember Sharon and Amber, too,
'Til April Showers came along, they nearly wore out the Caisson Song. For a cheerful smile and winning ways
We'll remember Mike the rest of our days.
When marble season finally came around
And the boys knuckled down out there on the ground,
Rings and pots could be seen everywhere,
And Darrell and Thomas were sure to be there!Three new students came to our room this year,
Roger, Pat and Kathy McKinney--
Kathy came last, she made 37, our room was sure crowded,
We're glad she was skinny. Now the year's about over--our hearts fill with pride
When we think of the hard work we've done,
Soon the doors will open wide to the future outside--
Made way, Junior High! Here we come! ! !
