To the Students of Monroe----1958

How well I remember the year 1976!!!  It was the year of the 200th
anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.  Throughout this great
land of ours, people were celebrating the occasion, and remembering
the great men of that time that plotted the course of this country.
How things have progressed.  The new administration in Washington was
one of the leaders in the highly successful world peace organization.
No thought or threat of war had been evident for over 20 years.  The
main countries of the world no longer had a tremendous backlog of ammun-
itions and weapons.  All efforts now were directed toward peace, and
bountiful living.  In this year of 1976, my mind drifted back to the
year of 1958, and to some of the personalities and events of that time.
I remembered that was when Eisenhower was the president of the United
States.  Robert Smylie was the governor of Idaho, and it was during the
summer of that year Idaho experienced it's best fishing season since the
coming of the white man to the territory.  I thought of some of the boys
and gir ls who graduated from Monroe Elementary School that year.  I
Wondered what had become of them.  What were they doing now?  It was not
too much trouble to check with the United States Historical Society,
who had this information on them in their files.  I thought you might
enjoy hearing some of the information I dug up on these former students:

Linda Barnett was the chief foreign correspondent for the New York
Times, with stories datelined from countries all over the world.

Riley Cutler was still the chief catcher for the New York Yankees,
although some of the younger men were pushing him for the job.

Carol Cluff was to be found as a professor of Ancient History at
the University of Southern California, where the climate was
     really agreeing with her.

Pete Daines was harder to locate, but was finally found to be the
center of the newly integrated Harlem Globe Trotter's Basket-
ball team, and was playing all over the world.

Alan Dixon was found sitting behind a big desk in the New First
National Bank, with a big sign saying President.

Darrell Dixon was easier to locate, as he had just concluded a
successful campaign for the position of mayor of the City of
Boise.  He had won this campaign on the promise to hold school
for 12 months each year for every school child up to the age
     of 24.

Paul Fahnstrom was located as the owner and manager of the largest
lumbering operation in the State of Idaho.  He had devised a
new type of saw that ran on atomic power that would cut and
trim a tree in one operation.

Mike Gahar, when he was finally located was a Lt. Col. in the U.S.
Army Air Force, serving active duty at the South Pole.

as a singer and dancer on the Hit Parade TV show.

General Hospital, famous for his operation that removed the
     human need of sleep.

position as head research scientist in the further study of
     inter-planetary travel.

Coral Howell, after taking 14 years of graduate college work was
starting her 5th year as principal of Boise's sixth new High School

Patty Irvine had become a top Metropolitan opera singer, and her
voice had become known around the world.

Betty James was located flying between Los Angeles and Buenos
Aires as the first woman Pan American Airlines pilot.

Julie Jones was a hit on all the signboards as the star attract-
ion of a hit Broadway musical.

Miriam Low, I found out was the representative of the United
States on the Olympic Swimming Team, and was in training,
swimming 14 miles a day.  She was expected to set a new
     record.

David Lynch, with a big black cigar, was the chairman of the
     board for General Motors Corporation.

Thomas Masters, whose picture had appeared all over the state of
Idaho during the recent political campaign was the new
     Senator-elect from this state.

Elena Martin had risen to fame as a lady General in the Woman's
Army Corps, and had led her troops in the Battle of
the Arctic, claiming the North Polar region for the US.

Patty Monson's fashions were known and worn over the whold world,
designed by her in a large suite of offices in Boston.

James Moore, and his five Morons, was the hit dance band directer
of the country, and currently is playing in the Coconut Grove.

Larry Morris had taken Cheyenne Bodie's place as the hero of many
a western movie, and was living in a deluxe home in Hollywood.

Amber Noe, after a career as a real estate salesman, had married
     the bachelor governor of Montana.

David Paustian was found on the high seas as the Navy Captain of
     the latest atomic powered battleship.

Judy Putnam had taken up residence in Paris, and was designing
dresses similar to the old style sack dress of 1958.  She was
using terry-cloth in their construction, rather than the
     burlap they used to use.

Becky Robbins, known throughout the country, had just returned
from Hollywood where she had won the Oscar for this year
     as the best leading lady.

Wirginia Russell, was in Washington DC. and was the interior
decorator of the newly built White House, at a salary of
     $80,000 per year.

Tina Schwartz, still in the prime of youth at 40 years of age,
was a famous ballet dancer in a New York Show.
Bill Simpson had just set a record as the home run king of the
National League, while playing outfield for the Cleveland
     Indians.

Roberta Steele, the newly crowned Mrs. America, and the mother
of six sets of twins, was on a nation wide tour of the
     country.

Michelle Taylor had just received her appointment from the mayor
of Chicago as the lady director of the Chicago National
     Art Gallery.

Patty Travor was located on a ranch in Texas, driving a brand
new Lincoln, and was the wife of a billionaire Texas oil man.

Ricky Wells, having beaten all comers was the head man for the
United States Olympic Team in the 100 & 200 meter dashes.

Judy Whaley was found holding the title of Champion cook and
homemaker for the 11 Western States and Alaska.  She had held
this title for 6 years, beating all newcomers each year.

Sharon Queen was found as the princess in a new kingdom in South
America, formed from the territory that used to be Brazil.
She was a real leading lady in the huge palace.

Roger Hopt, a 5 star general with his offices in the Pentagon
Building in Washington DC., was the director of all defense
     in the south polar regions.

Kathleen McKinney was found traveling the rodeo circut as the
Rodeo Queen and champion bareback rider.  She had the unique
honor of being the only queen never to have been thrown from a
     horse.

After hearing how successful each of the former students in Monroe had been
in his chosen field it made "Old Man Stimple" feel pretty good that he had
been their principal at one time, way back in 1958.
